It is a part of the set of Greek islands known as the Dodecanese. It is historically notable for being the place where the father of medicine, Hippocrates, was born. The name of the island has remained the same throughout greek history. It currently has a population of about 30,947. Natives of Kos are called "Koans." The island is one of the more popular tourist destinations in Greece. Kos, as it is currently constituted, is an amalgam of three former municipalities -- Dikaios, Irakleides and Kos -- which merged in 2011.
