In the midst of the Dodecanese is a gem known as Kios which despite the harmonization of ancient and modern architectural styles dates back to around 366BC. One interesting thing to do in this breathtaking place is to visit the Castle of the Knights of St. John which is flanked by a descendant of a 500year old tree believed to have been planted by Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine. Surrounding the tree is a wall adorned with Turkish ornaments and Arabic writing. A packet of seeds from this tree, given to the United States were planted around the grounds of the National Library of Medicine in Washington, DC (more info on Places To See in Kos).
